Comparison pylotik vs Planview: which software to steer your projects and your commitments?

pylotik vs Planview: the choice depends on the scale at which you steer. Planview is a suite of strategic portfolio management products, designed for large enterprises: it links strategy, investments, resources and execution. pylotik is a single software that steers and arbitrates the portfolio, and steers contracts, projects and maintenance with clients and suppliers, including team management. Planview equips the allocation of budgets in fine detail; pylotik ties the arbitration to what was promised to the client.

In 30 seconds

An enterprise suite facing a steering tool.

Planview

A suite of software: Planview Portfolios for the portfolio, finance and resources, AdaptiveWork for project management, ChangePoint for service firms, ProjectPlace and ProjectAdvantage (formerly Sciforma). AI functions are grouped under the name Planview Anvi.

pylotik

An operational commitment management software. Contracts, projects and maintenance, portfolio, committees and team management live in the same tool, with intervention scheduling in addition. The external client has free access to follow and validate what concerns it.

The main difference

Planview covers a very broad scope across several products, centered on the organization's portfolio. pylotik covers portfolio steering and arbitration in one piece, and adds the client, the suppliers, team management and day-to-day execution.

Which profile each one fits

Planview suits a large enterprise that has already deployed the suite, with an involved finance department and an extensive information system. pylotik suits an organization that wants to steer its portfolio and its client or supplier commitments without assembling several products.

The audience

Who each solution is for.

Planview

Large enterprises: general management, PMO and EPMO, finance, transformation directorates, R&D and product. ChangePoint and AdaptiveWork also target professional services organizations. The vendor is based in Austin, Texas; its European clients are hosted on AWS, in Frankfurt.

pylotik

Project and operations directorates and executives of any organization that runs projects with human time committed, for an external or internal client: industry, construction, engineering, digital services, maintenance, administration or public service. Designed and hosted in France by orgatypik SAS, with public prices on the pricing page.

Alternative to Planview

Why organizations choose Planview.

Planview stands out for the breadth of what it links. Its public documentation stresses five points.

  • Financial planning of the portfolio Budgets, forecasts, actuals, capex and opex constraints, costs of agile teams.
  • Reporting More than 200 ready-to-use reports and embedded Power BI.
  • Scenarios Simulated prioritization, staffing and scheduling, roadmaps and OKRs.
  • Integrations A broad catalogue: SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, Atlassian, Microsoft.
  • PSA coverage With ChangePoint: contracts, rates, fixed-price, time-and-materials or subscription billing, fed by approved time and expenses.

The suite also documents multi-level programs (programs, projects, products, epics), dependencies between projects, and an External Collaborator portal in AdaptiveWork to share projects, files and conversations with outside people.

In all honesty

Where Planview remains the better choice.

Capex and opex financial planning

Allocating budgets between capex and opex, simulating prioritization scenarios, linking OKRs to investments: this is the core of Planview Portfolios. pylotik steers and arbitrates the portfolio on workload, priorities, milestones and decisions, without capex and opex financial planning or scenarios.

The invoice issued in the same tool

ChangePoint issues billing from approved time and expenses. pylotik keeps the payment schedule, the invoiced and paid amounts and the amount still due, but does not issue invoices: it connects to the ERP, through a connector built to your needs, to send it the billing orders. If you have no ERP alongside, ChangePoint answers that need.

A suite already deployed across the group

If Planview is in place at group scale, with its many integrations to ERP, CRM and development tools, staying in that ecosystem makes sense. pylotik has neither a public API nor SSO; its connectors, which are optional, are built as the need arises, according to clients' needs.

Multi-level agile programs

Programs, products, epics and features funded at several levels, dependencies tracked across teams and across projects: Planview documents this depth. pylotik links projects at one level and monitors dependencies without automatic recalculation of dates.

Feature by feature

What each vendor documents.

For Planview, several features belong to a product of the suite other than Portfolios, notably ChangePoint or AdaptiveWork. "Not documented" means that the public documentation does not mention it, not that the tool does not do it.

The other question

Where pylotik is a relevant alternative.

Arbitrating a large portfolio is the historical ground of PPM, and pylotik covers portfolio steering and arbitration: portfolio view, workload, priorities, milestones, committees and decisions. It brings clients and suppliers into it, day to day, in a single tool, where Planview spreads portfolio, contracts and external portal across several products.

Contract, milestones and amount due, read by the client

Each project links a supplier and a client and carries its contract: a payment schedule on milestones for fixed-price, a monthly schedule for time-and-materials. Ordered, invoiced, paid, amount still due, cost and margin are tracked on the supplier side. The client sees progress and what is submitted to it, without margins. See project financial tracking.

Committees, minutes and decisions validated

Agenda, minutes submitted to the client, who validates or refuses with a reason, with tacit validation at the agreed deadline. Decisions, actions and risks, shared or internal, stay attached to the project. This is project governance with the client, with no slide deck to rebuild.

Maintenance in the same tool

Maintenance contracts (period, volume in days, catalogue, committee, indicators shared with the client) are in the core. In addition, the Interventions module, from the Business tier, schedules by the half day and has the work accepted through the client's signature. See maintenance contract management.

Team management, without rating

Workload plan, weekly time entry, weekly report, reviews and leave: team steering feeds the projects and the profitability of each commitment, which is lost as much at the client as in the team. Nobody is rated, nothing is scored, and the author of a piece of feedback chooses its recipient.

Work is often done in several tools, and the steering is then rebuilt by hand. With pylotik, commitments, meetings, decisions, validations and reporting start from the same reference data, which the client consults from its free client portal. The principle is detailed in operational commitment management.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Planview and pylotik.

Does Planview have a portal for clients?

Its documentation describes an External Collaborator portal in AdaptiveWork, for sharing projects, files, conversations and requests. It does not say whether this access is license-free. In pylotik, client access is free on every tier for external client organizations.

Do you need several Planview products to cover projects, contracts and billing?

According to the vendor's documentation, the portfolio belongs to Planview Portfolios, contracts and billing to ChangePoint, the external portal to AdaptiveWork. Interventions and maintenance contracts are not documented in the products reviewed.

Does pylotik invoice clients?

pylotik does not issue invoices: it connects to the ERP, through a connector built to your needs, to send it the billing orders. It keeps the payment schedule, the ordered, invoiced and paid amounts, the amount still due, the cost and the margin at completion.

Can Planview and pylotik be used together?

Yes, notably when the Planview suite is already deployed across the group: it keeps the financial planning, and pylotik steers the commitments with each client or supplier. A connector between the two, optional, is built to your needs.

Where is the data hosted?

Planview states that it hosts its European clients on AWS, in Frankfurt. pylotik is designed and hosted in France.
